I first met Ken after Chris Shivley in Hawaii got us both on the phone together. We were doing some business with Jeff/Home Depot CVG 6 & 8′ and Chris wanted Blackpoint to sell our VG Doug Fir. Visiting The Novato branch for the first time Ed Schurr says to Ken “Dave would be a good add to your event”. Now that was fun, golf/bowling/pool etc. One year we did poker the night before at Keach’s. Those guys always made me feel like I had been around for decades growing up with their crew in Marin County.
Business with Ken was great, we spoke the same language: honesty, common sense. Over the years Cedar, Hemlock, Mouldings all were added. Those were fun times for sure. During covid Ken came to Bandon where his brother was living and did a tour of our processing plants around Oregon, after we finished off the week with a round of golf at Bandon Dunes along with Kack Alley. And a really good meal (outside). Within weeks Jim was selling loads of our down-fall & low grade out of the back of his truck. Dozens of semi loads over a few years.
It was simple business, done with a handshake and every month of so they would send a check for the last load shipped and ask for another. Those two were the most trustworthy honest guys around. And they new how to have a good time too.
I talked with Kenny a few days before he passed. He wanted more lumber shipped! from his hospital room he was still living the dream. We had a great talk, makes me smile every time I think of him.
